Step into an intimate session with Regina Kanyu WANG, a rising star from China’s literary skyline, as she presents her new publications in German: „Seafood Restaurant“ (《海鲜饭店》, Drachenhaus-Verlag 2024), her latest collection in German that interweaves technology and humanity within the fabric of Chinese science fiction, and „Zhurong auf dem Mars“ (《火星上的祝融》, Kapsel/MaroVerlag 2024), her Hugo Award nominated story about an AI seeking for the mysteries of life on Mars. Born in the transformative setting of 1990s Shanghai, WANG’s stories transcend mere technological curiosity, and instead delve deeply into the individual’s turmoil and choices amidst relentless scientific advancements.

Together with researcher YAN Feng she will also give an overview about the latest tendencies in Chinese Science-Fiction. Regina Kanyu WANG is a writer, researcher, and editor, currently a research fellow under the CoFUTURES project at the University of Oslo. She has also been an Applied Imagination Fellow at Arizona State University’s Center for Science and the Imagination. She writes science fiction, nonfiction and academic essays in both Chinese and English. She is co-editor of the Chinese SF special issue of Vector, The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories: A Collection of Chinese Science Fiction and Fantasy in Translation from a Visionary Team of Female and Nonbinary Creators, New Voices in Chinese Science Fiction, and the English version of The Making of The Wandering Earth: A Film Production Handbook. Her stories can be found in her short story collections Of Cloud and Mist 2.2 and The Seafood Restaurant, various magazines and anthologies, and annual best collections. She has been translated into over ten languages and been invited to writing residences in Las Vegas and Berlin. She has won nine Chinese Nebula Awards, and been a finalist of three Hugo Awards and one Locus Award, for her stories, reviews, editorial works, and more.
YAN Feng 严锋 is Professor at Department of Chinese Literature, Fudan University. His research mainly focuses on science fiction, digital literature, and electronic game. He was visiting scholar at University of Oslo in 1997, associate professor in University of Tokyo from 1998 to 2000, visiting professor in University of Chicago in 2003, Harvard-Yenching Scholar in 2004, and visiting professor in University of California, Davis in 2010. He has served as editor-in-chief of the Chinese version of SCIENCE&VIE. His major publications include Poetics across Media, The Feast of Senses, The Century of Addiction and more.
Kapsel is the name of the project for contemporary Chinese science fiction. The Kapsel Crew, namely Lukas Dubro, Felix Meyer zu Venne, Chong Shen and Marius Wenker, promote an exchange between Germany and China through discussions, workshops and accompanying publications. Kapsel was launched in 2017 with a magazine consisting of contemporary short stories from China, essays, letters and illustrations. Six issues have been published so far featuring first translations by acclaimed writers Chi Hui, Xia Jia, Jiang Bo, Anna Wu, Baoshu, Liu Yang and Regina Kanyu WANG.
