In this dialogue with Prof. Zhiyi YANG, Goethe University Frankfurt, the author will discuss what inspires him creatively: problems that are symptomatic of the epoch in which we live, of a China rising fast and furiously in the world. His novels tell the stories of the bottom-feeders scavenging around Chinese metropolitans, of the effect of globalization on common people’s lives, as well as of the surveillance technology and a metaverse in video games. Time, however, is rapidly making these unfolding problems „historical,“ a unique challenge for the self-designated chronicler of contemporary lives.
