Stephen Owen ist Spezialist für Chinesische Literatur, insbesondere die Lyrik der Tang-Dynastie, sowie vergleichende Poetik und lehrt an der Universität Harvard. Darüber hinaus hat er eine von nur 26 Bryant Conant Professuren inne und ist Mitglied der American Acadamy of Arts and Sciences und der American Philosophical Society. Für seine herausragenden Forschungsleistungen im Bereich der Sinologie erhielt Stephen Owen 2018 den renommierten Tang Preis.
